Navigating Tax Season: Free Assistance for Low and Moderate-Income Households

As tax season approaches, many families, particularly those with low to moderate incomes, may feel a sense of anxiety. To alleviate this stress, the Trident United Way offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which provides complimentary tax preparation services for eligible residents in Berkeley, Dorchester, and Charleston counties.

Trident United Way’s Director of Community Initiatives, Angie Williams, highlights the program’s vital role: “We help you maximize your credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, which can significantly boost your annual tax refund.” For over a decade, VITA has been empowering individuals and families to secure larger refunds, thereby enhancing their long-term financial stability.

Eligibility and Service Details

To qualify for the VITA program, participants must be Tri-County residents with an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less. This service enables taxpayers to claim a range of eligible credits and deductions, including notable options like the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

To access these services, individuals are encouraged to schedule an appointment at one of Trident United Way’s Resource Connection Centers in the Tri-County area. Appointments are required and available from Monday to Thursday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Both in-person and online consultations are offered. It’s important to note that only the taxpayer or those filing jointly may attend these appointments, and the services are applicable solely to current-year filings.

Important Documents to Bring

To make the most of the VITA experience, participants should come prepared with essential documents, including:

  • Last year’s tax return
  • W-2 and 1099 forms
  • Social Security numbers for dependents

For a comprehensive list of required documents, please visit Trident United Way’s VITA page or reach out via email at TUWVITA@tuw.org.

Join the Effort: Volunteer Opportunities

The success of the VITA program heavily relies on community volunteers. There are various roles available, from assisting clients directly to providing support behind the scenes. If you’re interested in contributing, you can obtain more information and sign up to volunteer here.

Karen Chew, a dedicated volunteer, underscores the program’s positive impact after aiding over 100 taxpayers. “Clients often express their gratitude, especially when they receive refunds. It’s rewarding to know we’ve made a difference in their lives,” she shares.
