In a pivotal decision on Tuesday, Alabama’s Mobile City Council voted to implement a 2% increase in the city’s lodging tax, raising it from 8% to 10%. This marks the first adjustment in two decades, emphasizing a renewed approach to generating revenue for essential city projects.

Councilman Joel Daves highlighted the nature of the tax, stating, “It’s important to remember this is a lodging tax. This means that the majority of this tax will be paid by individuals who do not live in Mobile. The only way to incur this tax is by checking into one of the hotels in the city.”

He went on to explain that the increase is projected to generate substantial revenue, which will support various important initiatives within the city.

A key component of this ordinance is the allocation of revenues to the Mobile Airport Authority. The council has committed to directing up to $30 million generated from the new tax through 2036 to aid in financing the construction of the new downtown Mobile International Airport. This project is set to transform air travel in the region and bolster economic growth.

Additionally, the revenue will assist in funding a new downtown arena, further enhancing the city’s infrastructure and services.

The council took another significant step by renewing the Mobile Tourism Improvement District (TID), which was originally established in 2020. Currently, this district imposes a fee of $1 per room night for hotels in Mobile. Over the next five years, this assessment will gradually increase to between 1% and 2%.

The funds from the TID are directed toward marketing initiatives aimed at promoting tourism in the area. According to a press release from Visit Mobile, the initial term assessments contributed approximately $3.4 million to marketing promotions, showcasing the positive impact on the local tourism economy.

As Mobile prepares for these changes, the city council demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing its resources and infrastructure, setting the stage for future growth and increased tourism.
