The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has urged Israel to release Palestinian tax revenues, highlighting the growing financial struggles of the Palestinian Authority (PA).

His call followed an earlier announcement by the European Commission, which unveiled €400 million in emergency aid to help the PA cope with its financial challenges. In a post on the social media platform X, Borrell wrote, “The urgent need to increase our support to the Palestinian Authority has never been greater.”

Borrell said the EU is standing by its commitment to assist Palestinians during this difficult time. “The European Union is keeping its word by providing this financial package,” he stated. However, he warned that the PA’s financial needs are still massive. “We again call on Israel to urgently release all tax revenues,” he added.

The tax revenues in question come from customs duties collected by Israel on goods imported into Palestinian territories. These funds are crucial for the PA, as they are used to pay wages and fund public services.

The EU’s financial aid and Borrell’s statement reflect growing international concern over the PA’s worsening economic situation. The European Union and other international bodies are pushing for action to stabilize the region and prevent further financial instability.
