Low- and moderate-income Canadians are set to receive their next GST/HST credit payments next week, offering vital financial support amid ongoing economic uncertainties. Administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), this program provides quarterly tax-free payments to ease the impact of harmonized sales taxes for eligible residents.
What Is the GST/HST Credit?
The GST/HST credit is a non-taxable, income-tested benefit designed to offset the cost of the Goods and Services Tax and Harmonized Sales Tax for Canadians with modest incomes. Payments are issued quarterly, with the next disbursement scheduled for July 5, 2025.
Who Is Eligible?
Eligibility is automatically determined when you file your annual income tax return. To qualify, you must:
- Be a resident of Canada for tax purposes at the time of payment.
- Be 19 years or older, or have a spouse/common-law partner, or be a parent residing with your child.
- Have a net income below the applicable threshold: single individuals earning less than $52,255 and couples with children earning less than $69,015 annually may qualify.
Payment Amounts
The credit amount varies based on marital status and family size:
- Single individuals may receive up to $519 annually.
- Married couples or common-law partners may receive up to $680 annually.
How to Claim the GST/HST Credit?
No separate application is necessary for most residents who file their tax returns annually. The CRA automatically assesses eligibility and processes payments.
For newcomers to Canada:
- Parents should complete Form RC66 (Canada Child Benefits Application).
- Non-parents must submit Form RC151 (GST/HST Credit Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada).
Applications can also be conveniently submitted through CRA’s online portal, My Account, which streamlines the process by collecting necessary information including personal details and family status.
