Americans living abroad are reminded that while they receive an automatic two-month extension to file federal taxes, the IRS’s expat filing deadline falls on June 16 this year, one day later than usual due to the 15th landing on a Sunday.
Despite the geographic distance, U.S. citizens and permanent residents must still report global income and foreign assets annually. Failing to meet these obligations could lead to penalties even for those unaware of the rules.
The automatic extension applies to all U.S. taxpayers residing or conducting business outside the United States and Puerto Rico, including digital nomads, military personnel stationed abroad, and full-time overseas residents. Notably, the June 16 date is for filing only. Tax payments were still due April 15, and interest has been accruing on any unpaid balances since then.
Key Steps for Expats Ahead of June 16:
- File your federal return: Expats may qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (Form 2555) or Foreign Tax Credit (Form 1116) to reduce double taxation.
- Report foreign bank accounts: If the combined value of foreign accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time in 2024, the FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) must be filed automatically extended to October 15.
- Submit Form 8938 under FATCA: Required if foreign financial assets surpass the IRS’s reporting thresholds.
- Pay any outstanding taxes immediately to minimize interest and penalties.
Those needing additional time to file must submit Form 4868 by June 16 to secure an extension to October 15. However, this extension is not automatic, and again, it does not delay tax payments.
“Living overseas doesn’t exempt U.S. citizens from tax obligations,” says Nathalie Goldstein, CEO of MyExpatTaxes. “Understanding your responsibilities and meeting deadlines is critical to avoiding costly penalties and preserving peace of mind while enjoying life abroad.”
