The National Tax Service (NTS) of South Korea announced that individuals subject to comprehensive income tax and local income tax must file and pay their taxes by June 2, 2025.
Taxpayers can complete their filings online via Hometax (PC), Sontax (mobile app), or through the Automated Response System (ARS) by calling 1544-9944.
As part of its effort to streamline tax filing during May, designated as “Income Tax Filing Month”, the NTS is sending out mobile notification letters, including pre-filled tax guidance documents (known as “Modu-fill notices”) to approximately 6.33 million taxpayers. An additional 4.43 million taxpayers eligible for refunds are receiving pre-filled refund notices.
Taxpayers who receive these pre-filled notices can file easily without visiting a tax office; simply by clicking once in Hometax or Sontax, or calling ARS. Both platforms will offer a dedicated “Income Tax Filing” interface throughout May for ease of use.
Upon logging in, taxpayers will automatically see their assigned filing type and can proceed to a customized filing screen. If there are no changes needed, the tax return can be submitted in just a few clicks.
For those using mobile, tapping “Mobile Filing” in the Modu-fill message will lead directly to the Sontax interface. Choosing “ARS Filing” will bring up the appropriate ARS instructions for voice-based filing.
Some dependents who don’t meet deduction requirements are excluded from pre-filled forms. The NTS provides pop-up alerts prompting taxpayers to double-check any added dependents to prevent unintentional errors or penalty charges for false deductions.
Additionally, the NTS is automatically extending the filing deadline to September 1, 2025, for about 140,000 taxpayers in designated special disaster areas; such as victims of the Gyeongsang wildfires or the Jeju Air incident. No separate request or collateral is required for this extension.
The agency also emphasized that individuals facing financial hardship can apply for deadline extensions, which will be reviewed case-by-case.
Those filing comprehensive income tax must also file their personal local income tax during the same period. The process is integrated; once national taxes are filed via Hometax or Sontax, the information is automatically transferred to Wetax, the platform for local tax filing.
If no changes are needed on the pre-filled form, taxpayers can simply pay the amount listed via the virtual local tax account included in the notice—no separate Wetax login is required.
The NTS confirmed that local tax deadlines will be extended in tandem with national tax deadlines for affected individuals. For questions regarding local income tax, taxpayers can contact the dedicated call center at 1661-6669.
