Represented by the President of the Tax Authority, Amélia Muendane, Mozambique, is participating in the 15th Plenary Meeting of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes, held in Seville.
The Global Forum is a multilateral platform comprising 165 member countries, including 34 African nations. The agenda for this year’s session includes reviewing the annual report and assessing progress on implementing international standards related to tax transparency and cooperation.
Mozambique’s First Step Toward Full Membership
Amélia Muendane emphasized that Mozambique’s participation in the forum is a significant opportunity to learn about its processes and engage with other member states. She initially expressed interest in joining the forum as an observer, which would allow Mozambique to integrate into peer reviews and understand the practical implementation of global tax standards.
“Mozambique will use this opportunity to understand better how the forum operates and to connect with other countries for experience-sharing,” Mundane stated.
Bilateral Meeting with Forum Secretariat
On the sidelines of the event, Mundane held a working meeting with Zayda Manatta, Head of the Global Forum Secretariat. The discussion centered on Mozambique’s potential membership following an invitation extended by the Forum.
Manatta highlighted that joining the Forum would enhance Mozambique’s ability to combat tax evasion and illicit financial flows by leveraging global information exchange systems. This would ultimately increase domestic revenue by addressing hidden taxpayer income.
Next Steps: Technical Seminar in Maputo
Muendane invited Manatta to visit Mozambique for a technical seminar on the Forum’s mechanisms and benefits to deepen collaboration. A joint technical team from Mozambique’s Tax Authority and the Forum Secretariat will oversee preparations for the seminar, scheduled to take place in Maputo.
