The National Tax Service (NTS) of Korea has launched a new “One-Click” tax refund platform, offering a streamlined and fee-free service for taxpayers. The new service enables taxpayers to check their refund status and apply for refunds with a single click, simplifying the process significantly.
With the “One-Click” platform, users can instantly view their tax refunds for up to five years and submit refund applications in just one step. This innovation aims to reduce reliance on private tax support services, like Samjeomsam, which typically charge a fee of 10-20% of the refund amount. Unlike these platforms, the NTS service is completely free of charge, providing significant savings for taxpayers.
The introduction of this service comes after the National Tax Service’s successful initiatives to help over 10 million taxpayers secure a combined total of 2.6 trillion won in tax refunds. These refunds have predominantly benefitted income earners like delivery riders and private instructors since 2022.
Lee Seong-jin, Chief of Information Management at the NTS, emphasized the use of advanced big data to calculate accurate refund amounts, eliminating the complexities involved in considering family income thresholds, overlapping deductions, and differing tax rates. This system ensures that taxpayers get the most favorable filing method without the risk of over-claiming refunds.
The service is expected to assist 3.11 million taxpayers in claiming 290 billion won in refunds. Refunds processed through the One-Click platform are guaranteed to be paid within a month, provided no changes are made to the refund details.
Another key benefit is that the One-Click service does not require additional personal information, such as family relationship certificates, ensuring better data security and privacy. Moreover, because the NTS calculates refund amounts taking all relevant deductions into account, there is no risk of taxpayers being subjected to additional tax charges due to over-claiming refunds.
Looking ahead, the National Tax Service plans to introduce an AI-based automatic refund review system to prevent improper deductions and ensure accuracy in future refund applications.
