MADRID – The 2024 Spanish Income Tax (IRPF) campaign has officially begun today, running until September 30, 2025. Taxpayers can now consult, accept, or modify the settlement proposals issued by the Department of Taxes and Borders via the Government’s Electronic Headquarters. With an estimated 25,500 people expected to file their taxes, over 85% of them are expected to use the online portal.
Context & Background
The 2024 IRPF campaign marks its tenth year, now a key event in Spain’s tax calendar. This year, the Department of Taxes and Borders has issued a total of 53,772 settlement proposals. Of these, 32,662 show no due amount, 16,530 show amounts to pay, and 4,580 show amounts to be refunded. The total revenue expected from this campaign is approximately €26.2 million, contributing to an estimated total IRPF collection of over €68 million—€8 million more than in 2023.
Impact on Businesses & Individuals
The 2024 tax campaign introduces several key changes that could impact both individuals and self-employed professionals. New deductions for donations (mecenatge) have been incorporated, alongside additional deductions for self-employed workers and freelancers involved in sponsorship or projects promoting digitalization. Additionally, self-employed workers and freelancers can benefit from deductions related to job creation if the hired worker is registered with the Employment Service, is under 25 or over 55, or has a disability recognized by CONAVA.
Government & Expert Reactions
The new tax measures, introduced by Law 5/2023 on direct tax reform, aim to simplify and promote specific types of contributions to society, like donations and employment initiatives. Experts in tax law are welcoming the new deductions, especially for digitalization projects, which reflect the growing emphasis on technology and innovation within Spain’s tax policy. The Department of Taxes and Borders is confident that these changes will help make tax filing more efficient and beneficial for taxpayers.
What’s Next?
The Department of Taxes and Borders has also launched a new appointment booking tool to streamline the filing process. Taxpayers who need assistance or prefer to submit their tax returns in person can now easily schedule appointments. The service is expected to assist about 1,000 individuals. The Department urges taxpayers, especially those filing in person, to file early in order to avoid delays in September, when nearly 60% of filings occur.
