Canadians Set to Receive Second GST Credit Payment of 2025
OTTAWA – Millions of Canadians will see a boost in their bank accounts this Friday, April 4, as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) disburses the second quarterly Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) credit payment of the year. Designed to assist low- and modest-income households, this tax-free payment helps offset the cost of sales taxes on everyday goods and services.
Who is Eligible for the GST Credit?
To qualify for the GST credit, individuals must:
- Be at least 19 years old and a resident of Canada for income tax purposes one month before the CRA issues the payment.
- If under 19, they must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- Have (or have had) a spouse or common-law partner.
- Be (or have been) a parent living with their child.
- Parents with shared custody may receive half the credit for each child.
How Much Will Eligible Canadians Receive?
The amount individuals or families receive depends on their income and household status. According to the government:
- Single individuals can receive up to $519.
- Married or common-law couples can receive up to $680.
- Each child under 19 qualifies for an additional $179.
Automatic Payments – No Application Required
Canadians do not need to apply for the GST credit separately. Eligibility is automatically determined when filing an income tax return. Those who meet the income thresholds will receive the payment directly via bank deposit or mailed cheque.
Background: GST Credit and Inflation Relief
The GST credit is a key financial aid initiative, providing quarterly relief to millions. During the peak of inflation in 2022, the federal government temporarily doubled the GST credit for six months to help Canadians cope with rising costs.
Other Government Payments to Watch For
In addition to the GST credit, Canadians may also be eligible for the final Canada Carbon Rebate payment this month. Taxpayers should ensure they file their 2024 tax returns promptly to claim all applicable benefits.
