In the wake of devastating wildfires in Los Angeles County, California has announced significant tax relief measures to support impacted businesses. Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) are extending deadlines and offering additional resources to help businesses recover and rebuild.
What’s the Relief About?
Businesses in Los Angeles County now have until April 30, 2025, to file sales and use tax returns originally due on January 31, 2025. This automatic three-month extension applies to taxpayers with less than $1 million in quarterly sales and use tax obligations.
For businesses outside LA County: Relief, including deadline extensions and interest waivers, is available upon request.
Additional Support
The CDTFA is offering:
- Interest and Penalty Relief: If you don’t qualify for the automatic extension, you can still request help.
- Flexible Payment Plans: Work with CDTFA to create a payment schedule that fits your needs.
- Free Tax Record Replacement: Lost tax records? The CDTFA will replace them at no charge.
- Help with Account Updates: Assistance is available for changing addresses, updating permits, or closing locations.
Businesses can reach CDTFA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-400-7115 for personalized guidance.
What’s Not Included?
Some tax obligations are excluded from the automatic extension, such as:
- Licensing fees for cigarette and tobacco products.
- Returns under the International Fuel Tax Agreement.
- Vehicle sales taxes paid through the DMV (non-vehicle sales are eligible).
Governor Newsom’s Message
“California stands by our businesses during this unimaginable tragedy,” said Governor Newsom. “We’re committed to doing everything possible to support recovery and help businesses rebuild stronger.”
