In a fiery speech marking his first 100 days in office, President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to both Democrats and Republicans opposing his budget reconciliation bill, predicting a historic tax increase should the legislation fail.
Speaking at a rally in Michigan, Trump said his bill enjoys “just about 100% Republican support” and lamented the presence of a few “grandstanders” within his own party who threaten to derail the legislation. “It would be nice if we had just a couple of Democrats, just to make sure,” he said, urging voters to remember and oust dissenting Republicans.
Trump framed the bill as a defining economic initiative of his second term, pledging massive tax cuts—including the elimination of taxes on tips, Social Security, and overtime. He claimed that if the bill doesn’t pass, the U.S. would face a 58% tax hike, calling it “the highest tax increase in history.”
“All my life, I’ve watched people campaign on lowering taxes. Now, Democrats say they want to raise them. I said, ‘This country has gone crazy,'” Trump told the crowd.
Trump promised the legislation would lead to the “biggest tax cuts, regulation cuts, military supremacy, and just about everything else.” He predicted the average American family’s take-home pay would increase by at least $5,000, while seniors would see protections for Medicare and Social Security.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking after a meeting with GOP leaders, confirmed that House and Senate Republicans were aligned on passing the bill. The legislation also seeks to raise the debt ceiling and fund Trump’s priorities on energy, defense, and border security.
Despite broad Republican support, most Democrats are expected to oppose the package, setting the stage for a high-stakes legislative battle that could define the remainder of Trump’s term.
