Starting April 15, 2025, additional customs duties will apply to certain goods originating from the United States (US). These tariffs will range between 4.4% and 50%, with the majority falling between 25% and 50%.
This update revises an earlier announcement which mentioned an April 1 start date. The European Commission has proposed to delay the start date by two weeks, a suggestion that has been accepted by EU member states.
The goods affected are listed under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/724 (as amended by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/866) and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/502. Regulation (EU) 2018/724 has been in effect since May 17, 2018, while Regulation (EU) 2020/502 has been in effect since April 7, 2020. These additional customs duties were previously suspended, but they will come into force once again starting April 15, 2025.
What does this mean for you? If you are importing goods from the US that are subject to the above regulations after April 15, 2025, these additional customs duties will apply. However, there is an exception for goods exported from the US before April 15, 2025. If you can prove that the goods were exported before this date, you may be exempt from the additional duties. This provision applies to ‘sailing’ goods, but it is not yet clear if this exemption will be officially enforced. Questions have been raised with the European Commission, and further updates will be provided once clarity is reached.
Please note that for the goods listed in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/502, this exemption does not apply.
