The Georgia House of Representatives has approved a significant measure aimed at providing financial relief to taxpayers across the state, passing a new round of surplus tax refund payments.
This legislation, which authorizes $1 billion in refund payments, aligns with Governor Brian Kemp’s ongoing efforts to support families dealing with economic challenges.
On Crossover Day—the critical deadline for advancing legislation to the Senate—the House voted unanimously in favor of House Bill 112, with a decisive tally of 175-0.
The proposed payments are structured in a straightforward manner: $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for married couples filing jointly.
Given the overwhelming support, the bill is expected to secure approval in the state Senate shortly.
Governor Kemp expressed pride in the bipartisan effort behind this initiative, stating on social media, “We’re also proud of our partners in the State House for unanimously supporting this year’s special income tax refund, helping hardworking families fight through sky-high prices. Looking forward to its final passage in the State Senate!”
These refund payments will be drawn from Georgia’s substantial budget surplus, reported at over $11 billion.
This surplus also played a key role in Kemp’s recently proposed amended budget for the 2025 fiscal year, which outlines an increase of $4.4 billion in spending.
At a ceremony in the state Capitol, Kemp signed the budget that incorporates this additional expenditure, which is funded by approximately $3.1 billion from the state’s cash reserves, including the surplus and a $5.5 billion rainy day fund.
