As we approach the tax deadline of April 15, it’s essential for Coloradans to stay informed about the latest updates regarding their tax filings. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began accepting tax returns on January 27, and individuals in Colorado can now file their federal taxes.
However, the Colorado Department of Revenue has indicated that the e-filing links for 2024 taxes, including individual income tax, fiduciary income tax, and business income tax, will be available “soon.” The department’s website advises users to check back in early February 2025 for updates.
With February rapidly progressing, many residents are understandably eager to know when they can start filing their state taxes online. In a recent statement to FOX31 on February 13, a spokesperson for the Department of Revenue acknowledged the inquiries, stating, “We have nothing to announce at this time and are focused on completing the necessary work to ensure taxpayers have a smooth and secure tax filing experience.”
Historically, the state has started processing income tax returns between Martin Luther King Jr. Day and early February, and in the previous year, Colorado taxpayers were able to submit their 2023 returns in mid-February. For those utilizing tax filing software, there may be ways to prepare in advance. For instance, TurboTax has mentioned that it will accept Colorado state tax returns and will hold them until the state is ready to process them.
It’s important to remember that when filing state taxes this year, Coloradans must take an extra step to claim their Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) refunds. With the expected refund amounts ranging from $177 to $565 based on income, ensuring that you follow the necessary steps for your tax return is crucial.
As we await further updates from the Colorado Department of Revenue, staying proactive in your tax preparations can help ensure a smooth filing experience once state returns become available.
